During a Reiki Session

The sessions can be adapted to the needs of the client and no clothing is removed during Reiki. It is a good idea to wear a comfortable outfit to enable you to relax and you may wish to take off your tie, scarf, belt or any large items of jewellery but this is not absolutely necessary

You can receive Reiki either lying comfortably on a massage couch with cushions and blankets to support you and keep you warm or simply relax in a chair. You may have the therapist's choice of music but do feel free to use your own - some clients prefer silence

The session involves the therapist laying her hands in a series of positions around your head and body - If you are uncomfortable with touch then the hands will be held over the different areas, hovering within the aura, or energy body. This makes no difference to the effectiveness of the treatment. Simply say what you would prefer

It is not advisable to have a large meal or drink any alcohol prior to your treatment and try to plan for some quiet time afterwards if at all possible.

You will advised to drink water following your session so please have a bottle close to hand.

Benefits of Reiki

Reiki is very helpful if you are upset, distressed or depressed. It may help your recovery from distress, upset and depression. For example, if you are suffering from being bullied or dealing with difficult people then Reiki sessions may help you cope better. Reiki works well with other therapies such as counselling and can lead to better progress towards happiness and experiencing joy once again

Reiki can help promote physical recovery in conditions such as sports injuries, problems resulting from accidents as well as painful diseases such as rheumatism, arthritis and sciatica. It brings balanced energy flow which brings us improvements in our wellbeing at all levels

Reiki encourages you in developing positive personal change such as giving up smoking, reducing your alcohol intake and eating a healthier diet

Reiki has been used alongside medical treatment to help patients with problems such as heart disease, strokes and cancer

Reiki complements conventional medical treatment and other therapies and may enhance their effectiveness. Reiki is not a substitute for medical diagnosis and treatment and you should continue to follow medical advice and let your doctor, counsellor or other therapist know that you are receiving Reiki.

Reiki reduces stress in animals

In animal studies, Reiki treatment produced clear signs of reduced stress as indicated by changes in autonomic, biological measurements such as heart rate (Baldwin, Wagers and Schwartz, 2008) and certain cellular signs of stress-related damage (Baldwin and Schwartz, 2006).

Reiki brings pain relief...

Dressing and Sing (1998) found that among cancer patients, Reiki brought about significant levels of pain relief, anxiety and depression reduction, improvements in sleep quality, relaxation and general well-being. This effect was stronger in men than women. These benefits remained when checked after three months. Among abdominal hysterectomy patients, Reiki helped reduce pain and anxiety, particularly in a preoperative setting (Vitale and O’Conner, 1998).

Effects of Reiki on anxiety, depression, pain, and physiological factors in community-dwelling older adults.

A study by Richeson et al (2010) to evaluate the effect of Reiki as an alternative and complementary approach to treating community-dwelling older adults who experience pain, depression, and/or anxiety observed significant differences between the experimental and treatment groups on measures of pain, depression, and anxiety.
Relaxation, improved physical symptoms, mood, and well-being; curiosity and a desire to learn more; enhanced self-care; and sensory and cognitive responses to Reiki treatment were reported.

People suffering from depression benefit from Reiki therapy

Shore (2004) followed patients being treated for mild #depression and #stress. After six weeks of treatment and for up to a year afterward, those who had received Reiki showed both immediate and long-term improvements in depression, stress and hopelessness. In a small study, complete elimination of typical postoperative depression was seen in heart surgery patients given Reiki during surgery (Motz, 1998).
